Thanks for posting that article. This struck me: “As Montgomery has continued to grow in its diversity … we have not grown in our toolkit on how we meet the needs of Black children and brown children, how we meet the needs of our students with disabilities, and how we meet the needs of our English language learners,” Taylor told the roughly 30 attendees. “These are real weak spots for Montgomery County and things we need to address immediately.” The problem is that they are now taking a lowest common denominator approach. Everyone gets the same thing in school, and it is watered down. Those with resources give their kids what they need by supplementing. They tend to be white. But students of color who are bright and need more are less likely to have parents who can supplement outside of MCPS. This just exacerbated the inequities.
Furthermore, we keep talking about the disparities, but not the root causes of the disparities. If he's hoping to address these disparities "immediately," Taylor needs to be clear-eyed and explicit about what he's addressing. The disparate academic outcomes are the symptoms, what, specifically, does he believe to be the problems and their underlying root causes that HE is going to address?
