Preseason -2024 VA Boys Class 6 Rankings 1. Madison Analysis: Madison has won back-to-back state championships and three of the last four. They bring back some important pieces, including two committed attackmen and the 2023 Class 6 player of the year LSM. Loss of their D1 FOGO will challenge them but Madison’s coaches always seem to find a way, and they have a decent chance to make it three in a row and four of the last five. Crazy out of district schedule with Riverside, Atlee, Broadneck, Severna Park, Yorktown, and Robinson on tap. They have reached dynasty level now under Coach Solomon and are the team to beat again this year. They tend to start slow and improve over the course of the season, so they may lose a few games along the way but will be ready come the playoffs. This Week: 3/13 v. Riverside, 3/15 @ West Potomac 2. Robinson Analysis: Robinson once again lost some key players to graduation but they return some studs all over the field, including a very good attackman, a Rutgers committed defender, and a solid sophomore FOGO that gets them more than their fair share of possessions. They play Madison, Yorktown, Langley, and McLean in the regular season so we will get a good look at the Rams against the rest of the top teams before the tournament. Always one of the best coached teams in the area, the Rams should coast to the Region C championship. VHSL tournament realignment could see Madison and Robinson facing off on the state championship this year. This Week: 3/15 @ Yorktown 3. Yorktown Analysis: Yorktown graduated a ton of talent including much of their midfield and two high-scoring attack. They return one of the best attackman in Virginia, a strong FOGO, some solid defenseman and a top goalie. Scoring seemed to be down a bit in the preseason as the new starters looked get comfortable in their roles. No time to kill as they will get tested early with games against Robinson and Madison in week 2. Langley and McLean have closed the gap and will be looking to make a run at the district title, but the Liberty belt still runs through Arlington for now. This Week: 3/13 @ Centreville, 3/15 v. Robinson 4. Langley Analysis: Most of the team returns, including one of the top attackman in the area, several strong midfielders, and a pair of good young FOGOs. The Saxons looked strong in the preseason putting up a lot of goals and defeating two private schools with ease in scrimmages. Tough schedule ahead with out of conference games against Robinson, Cosby, Sidwell Friends, Broadneck, and South River should have them ready for the playoffs. Langley is one of the most complete and talented teams in Class 6 but they need to prove it on the field if they hope to return to their former glory days. This Week: 3/15 @ Centreville 5. Battlefield Analysis: Once again, Battlefield should be a lock for the state tournament and likely the #1 seed from Region B. They return one of the best goalies in the state and some solid position players, including an all-state midfielder and some tough poles. Battlefield lacks depth on offense but their defense should keep them in every game. Is the easier schedule this year with no Robinson, Madison or private schools on tap a sign that Battlefield is more vulnerable than in past seasons? Briar Woods this week could be an early test. This Week: 3/12 v. Briar Woods; 3/15 v. Independence 6. McLean Analysis: The Highlanders return many key pieces including a top notch goalie, two good poles, and stud midfielder. They will need to find some replacements on attack as all three regular starters graduated, including two of their top scorers. McLean had a somewhat quiet preseason and did not push themselves as hard as some of the other top teams, but they better get ready quickly because they face Robinson on 3/20. McLean could be a contender for the Liberty district if they can dethrone Yorktown while keeping Langley at bay. This Week: 3/13 v. Chantilly 7. Cosby Analysis: Cosby beat Battlefield last year and showed some grit facing Madison the next day in the finals after some scheduling issues. State runner up will have a tougher path this year with the VHSL tournament realignment, but a brutal schedule this season with away games at Atlee, Langley, Madison, and Robinson should have Cosby battle tested for the playoffs. Cosby normally doesn’t get a rank here but with so many matchups against NOVA teams this season we will get to see what they are made of before the tournament. This Week: 3/13 @ James River 8. Freedom South Riding Analysis: Freedom returns some key pieces including a first-team all-region defenseman and some decent attack and midfielders. Maybe not enough depth to topple Battlefield but should have enough talent to challenge Patriot for at least the second spot in Region B. Freedom took down Patriot three times last season in extremely close games and gets the slight edge to start the season. This Week: 3/14 @ Stone Bridge 9. Patriot Analysis: Patriot returns two first team all-region poles and a trio of D3 commits at the midfield and attack that should keep them competitive in the Cedar Run district. Tough out of conference schedule with Briar Woods, Yorktown, and Madison games looming. Look for Patriot and Freedom to continue their rivalry and fight for one of the Region B playoff spots. This Week: 3/14 vs. Faquier, 3/15 @ Briar Woods 10. Lake Braddock Analysis: Picking the bottom of the Top-10 feels like throwing darts blindfolded at one of the many teams in Region C not named Robinson. There are a number of teams that will probably end up around .500 or slightly better but will not be a significant threat come tournament time. Lake Braddock is a physical team and had a decent pre-season showing against Madison, so they get the vote for the last spot, but we expect this spot to turn over often as the “Also Considered” teams battle to crack the Top 10. This Week: 3/15 vs. Chantilly Also Considered: Hayfield, South County, Westfield, Woodson, West Springfield, West Potomac
Do you have Madison winning on Wednesday?
