My kid just received an appointment to USMA (West Point) and she knows. She was asked point blank if she understood and accepted the idea that she could come home in a pine box. And we, the parents were asked that too. (This was not asked by USMA, it was asked during her research into the academy). Kids don't just fall into service academies by filling out an application form. It takes a lot of work, and part of that is knowledge of the dangers. As I understand it, at USMA, after their second year, *that* is when they commit.
