Actually ancient Roman teeth were pretty OK. Their diets had low or no sugar so cavities were rare. They ate far chewier, tougher breads and meats from younger ages so their jaws were much stronger, which has the effect of causing teeth to come in straighter. And they used human and animal urine as a pretty effective teeth-whitener.
