My pet peeve is every single period drama that claims to be hIStoricALLY ACcuraTe yet features nary a toothless actress. Before modern dentistry people lost most of their crooked teeth well before their old age, why does Hollywood give their medieval princesses perfectly white, straight rows of pearly smiles?
Rome on HBO won the prize for that. All the actors had bleached and bonded teeth, spray tans, and trainer-sculpted perfect bodies. We get it: no one wants to see characters with fizzing, broken teeth and missing eyes, but reality leaves the building in most historical displays.
Actually ancient Roman teeth were pretty OK. Their diets had low or no sugar so cavities were rare. They ate far chewier, tougher breads and meats from younger ages so their jaws were much stronger, which has the effect of causing teeth to come in straighter. And they used human and animal urine as a pretty effective teeth-whitener. https://www.docseducation.com/blog/ancient-romans-had-healthier-smiles-we-do-today
