Students, faculty and staff were each exceptional in their own right. It is however terribly disheartening when students who were in kindergarten at the time of Sandy Hook almost instantaneously knew they were under fire, to respond by seeking cover and then barricade themselves in classrooms and closets while frantically texting families with real-time thoughts that might be the last they would ever be able to communicate, not knowing if the shooter was inside the school. They did so instinctually, even in the absence of direction by an adult. Some tried calling 911 but were met with a minutes-long wait with a looping message due to the apparent volume of calls. Others then knew to text “50411.” It speaks highly of our children but serves as an indictment of our country and it’s purported “rights” and “values.”[/quote]
