Because they'd already lost one kid.  Not protecting Burke wouldn't bring Jonbenet back, and they would likely lose their other kid.

I'm not saying that I'd do the same thing they did, but I can understand wanting to keep your only remaining child out of the juvenile system for what may have been an accident.  Maybe he would've gotten some kind of lenient sentence, but they didn't know that in the moment. I hope they got him whatever help he needed over the years.[/quote]
I’ve read so much on this case and it was definitely the brother. It seems like it was an accident and their parents were utterly traumatized and made up a story so that he wouldn’t get in trouble. I think they honestly couldn’t conceive of a way of dealing with the murder of their child by their son so they went on total denial and invented a story to tell the media.[/quote]
