Half the teachers in my NW DC school have refused to show up due to childcare or medical accommodation, despite day cares/babysitters being available and vaccinations fully available.
I think this is the issue that at this point generates the most ire (at least for me). I could understand prior to vaccination that teachers were TOTALLY FREAKED OUT by covid. They had the power to refuse to go in-person, and they did (and I think that is partially on the union, but certainly unionized charter teachers also refused to go in). But post-vaccination, the continuing refusal to go in is...well...it's not a good look. I get there are logistical challenges and differing things going on in every single school, but there are enough instances where it appears that teachers have taken advantage of the easy-to-get accommodations and have therefore just decided to continue working from home. That suggests they really don't care that DL is not providing adequate education for many, many kids.
I’m a pro WTU teacher and I agree with this. Some people have absolutely exploited the system and that’s a big problem. I don’t know the best way to remedy that, but I’d be unable to argue against the idea that teachers who have still not returned where there is demand are in the right.
