Stating the obvious, but if the backpack is “key” we’re in trouble.
This. It’s Walmart. Walmarts are everywhere. Without a receipt who knows what day it was purchased. Black Ozark backpacks were probably purchased everyday or every other day for years at the local Walmart. It’s a tourist town. People hike. It’s not a great clue to lead to a specific person.
You are missing the point. Yes, black Ozark Trail backpacks have been available for years. But new models of the backpack have small differences from previous models. That’s what makes them new models. Apparently, they could tell from the features that his is a new model and has not been available very long. It is unlikely that it would already make its way to poshmark or Goodwill. They can tell from language and references in his letters that he is likely from Tucson. This is a guy who looked directly at the camera, in this day of eye scans and facial recognition software, before grabbing some flowers to cover it up. I highly doubt he considered that his rather generic Wal-Mart purchase would be traced back to him. So yes, according to non-dcum investigators, he probably DID recently walk into the local Wal-Mart to purchase that backpack. Plus, they are probably making similar connections to other items he was wearing.
