Do you guys think that the dating these characters do in their 50s is anywhere realistic? I'm 49 and was in NYC yesterday and the city is teeming with attractive guys (30-55). They're all with young or younger women. I'm thin, used to be quite pretty and look good for my age but I'm basically invisible on the streets. I was wearing a super flattering sun dress and got compliments from a friend and two random female strangers. But guys looking? Pretty much no. It's striking when you get to a certain age---(right after 46+): you become invisible (I know, I know we've talked about this a million times on DCUM). But man, it's striking. I really wonder if any of the AJLT characters would get a chance (or a second look) from any of handsome men they're dating in the show. I hope they would!!!! I'm just skeptical.
I mean, it's fiction, they can take some liberties. I also wouldn't say that men are falling over them left and right. The only person with a truly active dating life is Seema, and even she has acknowledged that dating at their age is hard and that sometimes you have to be willing to put up with stuff (like a penis pump) if you want to have an active dating life. Charlotte isn't dating, Miranda's dating pool is a totally different situation, and Carrie has gone out with two guys so far, and one was a guy she was working with so it's not like he picked her up in a bar because of how hot she is. I also think there is a class element here you can't ignore. Yes, dating in your 50s as a woman is going to be brutal in some ways. But there is a dating pool available to an independently wealthy woman in NYC (like super wealthy, not just well off -- Carrie and Seema are rich-rich) that is not available to your average 40-something or 50-something single woman or divorcee. There is an appeal to a woman who is closer in age to these men (will get their cultural references, won't make them feel old or out of touch, will be more likely to relate to them intellectually) but who isn't just trying to find a rich guy to marry and have kids with. It's not every guy, but those guys definitely exist. They do not want to date women in their late 20s and early 30s who are looking for husbands and fathers. Many of them already are fathers or are divorced, they may work a lot or enjoy traveling, they may simply have no interest in family life. Someone like Carrie or Seema, with an interesting job and plenty of their own money, would be more appealing. Add in that they are reasonably good looking for their age, and yes, I think it is reasonable that those women would be able to find attractive men to date.
