I've always felt that private school was for the really dumb kids with extremely low IQ's. The kids who can't hack it in the real world go to private because public is to difficult for them. Around here however that doesn't seem to be the case. Still a difficult stereotype to get over.
I don't know much about private K-12 schools but I feel this way about a lot of private colleges/universities. Obviously the "top" colleges in the US are private but there are also a lot (I mean, A LOT) of really bad private colleges. And they're horribly expensive, too. I feel like anymore, those schools exist to cater to a certain demographic of middle to upper-middle class to working wealthy families, who's kids can't get into the top privates, and either can't get into their state's top public (a real problem with the good publics like UVA, Michigan, UNC, etc. which cap enrollment for in-state kids so the standard for in-state kids is much higher than out-of-staters) or choose not to attend it for whatever reason. They're stuck with huge debt or their parents front the overpriced bill to a tiny college hardly anyone has ever heard about.
Yes! This exactly!
