Algeria was better off as a French colony than an independent nation, any Algerian will tell you that. It's why they begged to get their colonial status back. Look what that got. Now this Tunisian decides to kill the best thing about his heritage - his relationship to Western Civilization. It's getting difficult to trust anyone who can't agree on the profound and fundamental importance of a civilization which has been through the Enlightenment, and one which has not. The philosophical underpinnings to even belonging in the 21st century apparently are missing.
Not sure what you mean by his heritage and relationship to Western civilization. Are you talking about Tunisia as part of the Roman Empire, homeland of Augustine, its status as a French colony, or his French citizenship? The Enlightenment was possible only because of what Islam passed on to the West--Aristotle. What are we giving to Islam to spur its Enlightenment? The Kardashians?
Christianity was born in the Middle East, not that far from where Islam was born about 600 years later. But for whatever reason Mohammed looked a lot better than Jesus, even though JC was all about loving thy neighbor. The most he did in terms of violence was get angry in a temple and toss out the money changers.
