My parents and grandparents (and other relatives) hit us all the time with hands, hairbrushes, wooden spoons, belts, etc., but it was always on the ass or the back of the legs. My dad was pretty much out of control on the corporal punishment front - he'd hit us for the most trivial things that any kid would do, e.g., accidentally dropping food on the floor - and because I don't want to be like him I have refrained from any hitting.
