I'm another parent who has spent a significant amount of money with tutors so that my child learns the material they missed in class. Tests are useless if no one is going to help the children learn the material they had trouble with on a test. Sorry, but I've got two children in MCPS (one of them is going to graduate this year, YEAH!!) and the other one has to suffer through a few more years of the mediocrity of MCPS. Wish we could afford private, but it's not an option if we also want to send our kids to college. It's a teachers job to teach even if it means re-teaching students who had difficulty with concepts assessed on a test.
I agree. When I went in for a test my child got a D in, I was told to get a tutor. She is an A/B student. She wanted me to hire a tutor because they were "moving on and it is obvious DD didn't master the subject matter." That was the last year we stuck it out with MCPS. We moved to private on a 66% financial aid package the following year. Best decision we ever made. Teachers actually teach, go over tests, re teach if needed and are available before/after/ and at least 2 periods a day. I hate that we have to pay for school but MCPS was just terrible.
