I think both schools are excellent and your kid will thrive and learn at both schools. Personally I would pick which ever school feeds into the neighborhood that makes the most sense for your commute.
OP is already in the more desirable Madison district.
Living in Vienna isn't for everyone because it is far outside the beltway. The location of the majority of neighborhoods that feed Marshall far outweigh the negative commuting options of Vienna. Madison is no TJ or Langley.
Vienna is right outside the Beltway. Madison is similar to Langley, except it has more community support. No one knows who goes to Marshall other than kids in Pimmit Hills. It just pulls from a bunch of random neighborhoods, including some in Vienna that wish in their hearts they were also assigned to Madison.
The center of the Madion's school district is way outside the beltway. Marshall pulls from many distinct neighborhoods with pimmit hills being one of them. Just because you are ignorant to that fact I will spell it out. If you look at this search Marshall pulls from definite neighborhoods like http://www.redfin.com/homes-for-sale#!market=dc®ion_id=135930®ion_type=7&sold_within_days=180&sst=&v=8 Dunn Loring Woods Shreve area Courthouse Tysons area Madrillon Tysons Actually allmost all of 22182 Tysons Proper Dunn Loring's entire zip code And many More Here is vienna and you will notice that it does also have far out broken neighborhoods in Oakton http://www.redfin.com/homes-for-sale#!market=dc®ion_id=54145®ion_type=7&sold_within_days=180&sst=&v=8
You proved my point. Town of Vienna is at Madison's core. Marshall is just a bunch of random neighborhoods in Falls Church, Dunn Loring and Vienna. And WTH is "22182 Tysons Proper"?
I think you need to go back and look up what "random means". From the map Marshall is zoned for neighborhoods that are right next to each other and cluster around the school. That is not random. Tysons proper is 22182 or now 22101 and 22182, it's a term used for defining the development by the county. This is also the zoning of the city tax area so in a sense it is the future city center. I can see how in the future Tysons will be regarded as a city the same way town of Vienna is currently. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/2013/board-creates-tysons-service-district.htm http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/2011/updates/tysons-now-official-mailing-address.htm http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/tysons/development/
No, the neighborhoods don't cluster around the school. They just are on different sides of the central Tysons shopping and business area, where not many people live. People who live in Vienna near Reston at Marshall don't live right next to people in Pimmit Hills in Falls Church. When more people live in Tysons, maybe Marshall will gain an identity as the county's "urban" high school, like TC Williams in Alexandria. That's a long way off. For now Madison has much more of an identity as a school associated with a specific area.
Look at the map and the neighborhoods and areas surround marshall (Cluster around them) If you look to the north east section it's pimmit hills If you look to the south east section is is the shreve area If you look at the south west it is dunn lorring If you look at the near north west it is Tysons (Madrillion, Court house area etc...) If you look at the far north west it is a neighborhood areas that follow the toll road to near wolftrap Anyways yes Madison has a specific town associate with it but saying that Marshall is a bunch of random neighborhoods that are not near or connected to each other is not true.
