Until FCPS is prepared to cut back on wasteful, under-utilized programs like IB, its claims of budget woes aren't going to get much sympathy. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/fairfax-schools-funding-an-annual-battle-with-county-board/2013/11/25/50082c52-4324-11e3-a624-41d661b0bb78_story_1.html FCPS could be paying for more teachers and classrooms instead of IB coordinators at schools where few students bother to get IB diplomas.
You don't get it, do you? Getting the IB diploma is a big deal. It is not an accident that a lot of colleges, including some of the highly touted on this site, award sophomore standing to students who have competed the IB diploma. Do you think the majority of any high school should be able to do that? Of course not. This is like saying let's eliminate the AP program because the majority of students don't take 8 AP classes. The IB program doesn't limit those who can take IB classes, so even if kids cannot manage the full diploma, they can take advantage of it. Of course, that is if learning is the objective, and not something else.
