I drank quite a bit when I was younger, and now drink very little, and I have come to the conclusion that it is mentally and physically better to drink less or not at all, than to drink heavily. I know for people who have never been heavy drinkers, this might seem obvious. And I'm happy for you that you seem to have figured this out early! I didn't, it took me time, but now I get it. When I look back on my early drinking, I can now see clearly how much of it I did because I was insecure, wanted people to like me, and wanted to live up to a specific expectation of "coolness." Specifically the heavy drinking. I'm not talking about having wine with dinner or a couple beers at a happy hour, but like hours of drinking to heavy inebriation, for fun, which is something I did regularly well into my 30s and now don't do at all. If people are rethinking that kind of drinking, I think it is for the best. I'm a parent now, and I'm not going to tell my kids to never drink, but I am going to teach them to think about WHY they are drinking. If it's just a moderate amount of alcohol to relax or celebrate, that's one thing. If you're using alcohol (as I did) to impress people, silence your inhibitions, help you forget, etc., it's unhealthy and you need to find other, healthier ways to cope with life and social anxiety.
