What BREAK? And why the sad face? Teachers are assigning work as they should do. There is no break on the calendar except for next Thursday and Friday. School has not been deemed a holiday or break for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Nor at this point has it been canceled. [/quote]

I can't imagine being upset that my high schooler had work assigned while school was probably going to be closed for multiple days. That's how it should be! They just had a two week winter break and will have lots of time on their hands. I wish my elementary schoolers would get some homework! A little structure is good. [/quote]

If your high schooler needs an entire week off with no homework right now, college is going to be tough for them. Now that everyone knows how to use Zoom we just meet virtually and don’t miss a beat when it snows unless it’s a lab course. And even then, a lot of of us have virtual lab activities figured out because of the pandemic. Maybe teach your kid to toughen up instead of hoping they get breaks all the time.[/quote]

Oh shut up. It’s the end of the quarter and many kids have a lot to do as the teachers frantically assign stuff to get their last required formatives and summatives in. In college you don’t sit around in classes all day long - there’s a lot more free time during the day to complete work.

The break is Thursday and Friday and is between quarters. Now they may get Monday-Wednesday too but some teachers are assigning work pre emptively which sucks. [/quote]

I always found this argument odd too. The workload in public school is a lot different than in college. Many college kids go to school full time and work. It’s really not the same time management wise.

The end of the quarter is very stressful for high school and middle school students. They have all of their classes with exams, final projects etc.

At least in fcps there are no requirements to be in zoom classes on snow days. Hopefully these kids can get some extra time to do their assignments and some time to relax too![/quote]

What do you think the midterm period and the end of a college semester looks like? All the exams, papers, and projects are due then.

You think it’s easier for students to manage work and school? Many are working long hours due to high costs. And the job market sucks so these kids are really feeling the pressure to do additional experiences during undergrad years that make them stand out and build connections.

Don set your kind for the idea that college is somehow going to be less stressful. They should be building their time management and resilience now so they don’t crumble when they are out of the house with less of a support system. [/quote]

Ok, well my kid is in his second year of college and has a job. Lives at home to save money, but we all make our own choices about things like that. Grades are a/b and time management is still developing. So far, college and work schedule is preferable to my kid, but not everyone will have the same experience.
