To me it’s obvious - he married the pretty girl as he was studying to be a doctor and apparently he lived in his car and she bought her rings. In his mind, the pretty girl was going to stay with him through thick and thin and until he made it big. The pretty girl left him and embarrassed the smart big surgeon. He’s resentful and hates her and stews on it. The pretty girl marries another doctor and that video and wedding pictures show how in love they are and how great they are doing together. He’s jealous and angry because that was supposed to be his life, not a loser with no kids or family or pretty wife. He kills them both. This isn’t about kids or dogs, just his hatred of them both, her in particular for living the life she was supposed to have with him and taking his happiness away with the divorce. In his mind he has nothing to lose and he knows he’s a loser, just makes her pay for it.
If we accept your theory, why didn't he do this 8 or 5 or 3 years ago? Why...now? He's not bad looking and a young surgeon isn't going to have any trouble meeting a pretty girl in Chicago who wants to be a SAHM. I suspect this man is newly mentally ill and/or a drug addict; maybe even SSRI induced psychosis/amnesia.
The Brown University shooter killed some innocent college kids at an elite institution he failed out of, then drove to Boston and murdered a gifted professor at MIT who had been the shooter’s classmate a quarter century earlier at university in Portugal. The classmate succeeded in his graduate and post graduate studies and became a professor and researcher into fusion energy, at the pinnacle of his field. The shooter went off the skids, failed out, was doing whatever and clearly descended into mental illness and ruminated (as the mentally ill tend to do) on his failures and the people he probably believed had unfairly achieved what was meant for him. Who knows about this surgeon. I dated a surgical resident once and he was a malignant narcissist. Among doctors surgeons have a certain reputation - not all fit the stereotype but many do. It takes a certain mentality to feel confident cutting into other people’s bodies for a living. Research indicates surgeons score higher than the general population on the dark triad traits of psychopathy and surgeons have the highest rate of divorce of any medical speciality. Certainly a surgeon is an attractive potential mate when considering economics and employment, but psychopaths don’t make the greatest partners for women who want emotionally supportive and attentive partners. His ex left him after 7 months for a reason - and a decade later he murdered her for it. It will be interesting to see what comes out about his relationship history apart from the one he slaughtered alongside her beloved husband while her children slept in their beds down the hall.
