I saw Hassaidic family walking to synagogue up in Bethesda. With them was a teenaged Asian boy who had the side curls (well sort-of b/c his hair won't curl) and was dressed the same as them. I concluded that he might be adopted. I then wondered how that works--how frequently do Jewish people adopt? Because if the children are not born from a Jewish woman then their descendants, strictly speaking, cannot be Jewish. So how do they marry them within the community. Would they basically be unmarriagable to other Jews?
Jews adopt all the time. The children are converted when they are young and at bar or bat mitzvah age, they are given the opportunity to affirm their conversion. It is .preferable to adopt non-Jewish children (assuming the adoptions are anonymous) as it avoids the possibility that there are blood relations leading to impermissible relationships later in life, I.e. ling lost sibling they don't know about.
