The military needs to do a better job when people separate from service of both psychologically testing them and making sure they are aware of all the benefits they may be available. Military life is hard on marriage and can mean you pass up other career activities . It put a huge hole in our pockets every time we lived separately (unavoidably). I am not in any way defending this guys horrific actions, but I've seen the transition out process and it's a rubber stamp. [/quote]

There is a lot of support available. It may vary locally,  but in this case, it does not appear a factor.  He had friends and family and became a real estate agent, War on Terror vets get generous funds, and he successfully finished a business degree while he was in the Reserves. 
He seems overall an unlikely person to have succumbed to the extreme ideology.  [/quote]
