I don’t play pickle ball or basketball so I don’t have a horse in this race, but there’s about to be, or maybe already is, a silver tsunami, so I can see businesses prioritizing the 50+ age group over children, when birth rates are dropping. Older people have the time and the money. The American population is aging.
Especially with how selfish Boomers are. They certainly don't care about kids well-being or giving back to the community or pitching in for a better tomorrow. Thwack thwack thwack thwack.
All you ageists in this thread might be surprised by how much pickle ball is appealing to the younger crowd. My DC is playing in a club at their college and spots in a tournament were filled within minutes last week. My niece, a recent college graduate in a new city was deciding between a kickball league and a pickle ball league as a way to meet people. Guess which one she chose. Maybe it’s a fad and will eventually burn itself out, but it’s a mistake to view it as only an “old” people thing.
https://www.thepickleballdinks.com/post/pickleball-statistics#:~:text=%E2%80%8D-,Pickleball%20Demographics%3A%20Players%20by%20Age,is%20the%20most%20popular%20demopgraphic.
Ages 18-34 represents the largest age bracket of pickleball players, totaling 28.8% of all players. Pickleball is getting younger every year. [...] According to the 2023 APP Tour’s Pickleball Participation Report, there are 36.5 million pickleball players in the United States. [...] The average age of pickleball players in 2021 is 38.1 years old, a decrease of 2.9 years (41) in 2020. This shows that pickleball is getting younger.
36.5M people play pickleball and the number is rising by leaps and bounds. vs. 24M people who played basketball in 2022, down from 27M who played in 2021. Lifetime is a for profit gym and they are redesigning their gyms for a growing demographic vs a shrinking demographic.
