These posts are crazy making. Even if dc lifted the 5 year limit, for the love of God take a peek at the requirements and the low amount you can receive. Nobody is thriving on tanf their entire lives. You must have children (that homeless guy under the bridge doesn't qualify), you must engage in searching for work/training activities, and, for example, a family of 4 can receive $850 per month MAX. And that's high. It varies by state. https://dhs.dc.gov/service/tanf-district-families
Actually only DC and Tennessee (I think) are the only two states/places that do direct cash assistance. Most states don’t spend their TANF money or do marriage counseling or abstinence education with TANF money.
Tennessee is sitting on hundreds of millions of federal TANF money because they don’t feel like giving it out.
I don't understand. Are you saying DC and TN are the only states that offer cash assistance?
I do not know where you are getting this misinformation. It is true that under TANF, some states are using a portion of their TANF block grant money for other state services not related to grant assistance. But it is just not the case that only a handful provide cash assistance under TANF. Even if you are thinking about cash assistance to childless individuals rather than families, it’s still more than 2 states. As of 2020, 25 states offer some form of cash assistance beyond TANF. Source: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Yes there are only two places in the United States that offer cash assistance. One is DC. I thought the other was TN but other posters said no. So it’s another State that I don’t remember. Other states sit on the money or use it for marriage counseling.
