** Spoilers for Ep 7 but not for any book stuff** It wasn't clear to me if Daemon and Rhaeneyra were in on the "Laenor isn't actually dead but escaped to live his own life" twist. Did Daemon kill that guard just as part of the plan to get the assassin/lover in the room with Laenor or was he helping secure a decoy body? Did the assassin/lover go to Laenor, tell him the plan, and the two of them staged his death and escaped? Rhaeneyra coldly killing (or thinking she did) her husband who just tried to recommit to being a good father make her a very different player than staging his death does.
This was my impression. I think Daemon and Rhaenyra were a part of the plot to fake the death. Daemon recruited Qarl and provided him with the decoy body.
Exactly right. All three were complicit in the plot to get the lives they wanted.
I also agree that all of them were in on it. I feel terrible for Laenor's parents unless they are later revealed to be in the know, but that's not the impression I got. As I asked upthread, do you think Daemon and Rhaeneyra will raise Daemon's girls, or the Driftmark grandparents will?
I think D&R will raise them for multiple reasons: 1) I think Daemon actually has real affection for them, which makes sense because he's incredibly self-regarding and they are his children. He won't just toss his own blood aside -- remember the Targaryen house words are "fire and blood." Family is everything to them. 2) They understand that the girls are also an asset. One of them is a dragon rider -- if they gave the girls up, they'd also give up the dragon. No way. Plus even without the dragon, the girls can be used as pawns in political plays down the road -- promised to other families in return for money or military or political support. They are incredibly calculating and their goal is to rule Westeros. They aren't going to throw away valuable assets. But both of these could also cause the grandparents to fight for the girls and try to sway them over to their side, especially when they are older and of marrying age. I anticipate lots of manipulations of this younger generation in future episodes/seasons. It's the GOT way.
NP here. I think there is a future score to be settled with Aemond for stealing the one daughter’s dragon. She desperately wanted one.
