I have a theory about why many people, including people in this thread, are so angry about masking. It’s because you have internalized the message from media and political leaders that we somehow have control over this virus. That if we just wipe down our groceries, and mask up, and stay home, we can beat this thing. And we haven’t beaten this thing. So you are incredibly angry at people you view as being irresponsible. Of course, none of that is true. The only thing that impacts this virus is weather and vaccinations. And we can only control one of those things. Residents of ffx county should be proud of our high vaccination rates. And accept that masking, and all of the other human interventions, make very little difference in virus spread. Just compare charts of, say, California and florida. Very similar numbers despite totally different approaches to mitigation. This is out of our hands. Get vaccinated and try to control the misguided fury you have at your neighbors.
False. The death rate is much higher in Florida than in California. Or here. Our behavior during these past two years has had a direct impact on death rates. You can see that in the numbers. Don't minimize what people in this area have done. https://www.bioinformaticscro.com/blog/states-ranked-by-age-adjusted-covid-deaths/
The chart you linked to says that the age-adjusted death rate is 284 in DC, 251 in Florida, 247 in Maryland, 234 in California, and 216 in Virginia. What inference am I supposed to be making from these numbers? What have people in this area done?
In this area we have a vastly higher percentage of the population who can work from home, for whom “social distancing” means something. That’s meant we weathered Covid better than many, but also that we’ve had the privilege of many being very cautious. Look at the zip codes where people tended to have to go to work in-person (grocery store clerks, line cooks, garbage truck drivers, etc.) and you can see they had it worst. We need to stop moralizing being in the Zoom class.
Looking at data is not moralizing. Being in the "Zoom class" has actually had an impact on death rates -- this is something that should be stated rather than avoided. Not just masks but also staying home has an impact during the pandemic. When you refuse to admit that, you sound like an unscientific person.
