I live in 20171 zip code. Herndon and Oak Hill are both recognizable city names for the mailing address purpose for 20171. Some residents in 20171 do try to avoid Herndon name and maybe they do that becuase they believe Herndon is not very desirable area. At the same time, I also have to say that 20171 area is quite different from Herndon downtown. Herndon proper vs Oak Hill (20171 Herndon) is kinda similar to Vienna vs Oakton in my opinion. Historically, Oak Hill area was originally called Fring Pan farm and then Floris. I beleive Floris used to have its own post office established in 19th century. Sometime in mid 20th century, Floris PO was merged into Herndon and from that time this area has been called Herndon at least for the the postal city name. So I think there is some historical basis to distinguish Oak Hill from Herndon.
By that description you live in generic Fairfax county. Anything not in an incorporated town or city has flexible / arbitrary boundaries. Call where you live anything you want. It’s basically meaningless unless your area incorporates. BTW I have heard from multiple, non-official sources that there are plans to buy up older, existing townhouse communities on the outskirts of TOH. I think people tend to identify more with where they shop, etc. For me, an Oak Hill resident--it is Chantilly and Fairfax. (some may be surprised to know that Greenbriar is in Fairfax-not Chantilly.) That's where I shop. I used to say I lived in Herndon and people always said "Oh, what a cute little town." It is a cute little town--but it is not where I live. Soi, that's why I began to say Oak Hill. People in Oak Hill have a number of high schools they attend: It probably goes in this order, though I am not positive: Oakton, Chantilly, South Lakes, and Westfield. Some may go to Madison. I don't think any from that zip attend Herndon. So, I think that is why the residents do not identify with Herndon. I think Herndon is pretty much within Dranesville District. Oak Hill is mostly Sully and Hunter Mill I think.
