Talking with our swim rep part of the problem is that if you set a rule that non-vax need to mask, they can't be trusted. At this point the only people not vaxxed are those who believe it's not necessary, and therefore also likely believe masks are unnecessary. CDC has said risk is very low of outdoor transmission but still large gatherings should be avoided if unvaxxed and/or unmasked. Half of any swim team is not vaxxed simply due to age. Between kids and adults you can have potentially 400-500 people in a given space. Reasonable adults can have very different opinions on what is an acceptable level of risk.
If someone is worried than they don't need to attend. Or they can require all adults to wear masks just for this meet. The NCAA softball World Series has packed, unmasked crowds right now all day. At All-Star relays, kids are in their team area most of the times fully spaced from other teams. Each team can set their own rules for their team area. They can make clerk of course spaced out and then on deck kids aren’t next to opponents/adults for a few minutes. CDC defined close contact as 15 minutes. NVSL Board shouldn’t have canceled All-Star Relays and they certainly shouldn’t have done it without consulting team reps. My kids have been in all-star relays for years (not D1). It is my least favorite meet - it is hot, you car barley see, caps and T-shirts cost way too much - but my kids love it and they bond with their team. This years seniors deserved the option of having it.
They were canceled. Let’s move along now.
