It was the timeline. Jack died soon after he told Nicky that they were finished and he never wanted to have anything to do with him. Nicky mentioned that last season. He put two and two together.  When told when Jack died, Nicky said something like,  “that’s why I never heard from him again. He died. I never knew. I just thought he hated me so much that he really didn’t want me in his life. Therefore I just stayed away.”  Of course I paraphrased. [/quote]

But he had already effectively cut Nicky out after that incident in Vietnam. The triplets were in high school when Jack died but he had never even mentioned the existence of Nicky to Rebecca or the kids. [/quote]
