almost 2 years in DA after being only 1 of 2 ECNL options for a decade? Don’t get too far ahead of yourself.
Yes. Listen to this guy. Everyone leave FCV now - it is sinking. Go to wherever his kid plays because they are the next powerhouse. Oh and don't forget to write your condolences when all your kids displace his kid on this new superteam. /s
Not a single person is saying that. But the reality is FCV and McLean no longer have their pick of the litter over the top 70 kids or so of every age group. They may stay on top but their teams will be diluted just like all the other clubs. What is really so hard to understand about that? Yes, older McLean and FCV teams are dominate and that is because of their not having to compete with 4 other ECNL or DA clubs in the immediate area for players. Those players did not leave their teams because they had been with them for several years already. But even with the 05's, if posters here are to be believed, a couple of former ODFC to FCV 05 players who were offered DA spots this year choose to leave FCV for McLean. Likely to both stay together and likely because they thought playing time, coaching, and possibly ECNL was better for them. The point is, the ability for FCV and McLean to continue to stockpile players are now over. The ODFC kids were clearly not initially placed on the FCV DA team and were likely not satisfied with the prospect of being subs for the coming year so they left. (This is all speculation of course.) Regardless, they did leave. How dilution will affect FCV in the immediate future going forward is the ability to maintain depth of high quality players. When the reality of the DA substitution rules hits kids and families at U15 being a sub is a tough spot to be in at a club that is playing to win and the rules do not allow re-entry. Those players, many of whom are very, very good are just harder to hang on to when there are places to start with similar showcasing opportunities. The issue of dilution down the road is showing itself with the 07 age group. Loudoun did retain almost all of its 07 talent, especially compared to years past. Arlington is retaining its players as well. Kids are staying put in their comfortable environments with their friends. Does this mean that kids won't travel to play at FCV? No, but a very significant dent to a previously bigger and more willing player pool has dried up. So looking at a clubs past and presuming that the beat will simply go on would be misguided. FCV may in fact continue to be the best DA in the DMV but the overall dilution in this region will certainly affect FCV's ability to be nationally significant in the coming years. 05, is the last great year for FCV and they are already losing players.
