I'm sure this became a thing because people feel sorry for moms who only have boys. Like a solidarity concept. So many with girls can't fathom how many of us are happy with only boys.
You nailed it!!!! I have had mom's tell me that they feel sorry for me that my son's will leave me when they meet a girl, but they will have their "daughter" forever. I just stared at the person who said that to me.....
no different than the people think mom's of girls will be dealing with a nightmare starting 9 yo and will be dealing with a hormonal mess until the girls are 30.
Also, my guess is that many of us on this thread (and IRL) who dislike #boymom actually HAVE sons. I have two sons and a daughter. I would have been thrilled with any combination of kids. Solidarity is not the same as stereotyping.
It's no different than a dad getting his nails done with his daughters. Nobody thinks they are better or worse. Moms of boys do lots of things that their boys like to do, it's really no more complicated than that. If you child likes band and you are carrying a tuba through a parking lot you might say #bandmom... the football mom's don't think they wish their kids played football they realize their embracing the child they have. Not every dude wants a dirty sports son and not every mom wants a cheerleader girl... it's always my past goth friends that get the cheerleader girl and my theater dude friend that gets the football player son.
Well, when I see a picture of a mom snuggling with her son, or of him dressing up in his sister's princess dresses, or daydreaming quietly, or reading to himself, and her throwing out a #boymom, then I'll buy that there's no harm in the label. I'll wait.
As soon as I see moms encouraging their girls to marry a teacher or a nurse... I'll wait.
I'd love it if one or both of my daughters marry a teacher or a nurse, or become a teacher or a nurse. I don't get it; are there FB posts about #girlmoms wanting their daughters to grow up and...marry a lawyer? -Mom of two girls
Exactly. (From the first I'll wait PP) People just don't post about who they want their kids to marry. I mean, really? PP, are you honestly saying you think boys should be pushed into traditionally masculine career paths so that they'll be more attractive to women? I know there are people who believe that sh*t, I just didn't think most of them would actually cop to it. How about this: I would love for any one of my three kids to be who they want to be and marry whomever they choose (or not get married at all, or anything in between).
Sure you would. It's easy to lie on the internet, pretend you are fine with that. Actually my boys have been told their whole lives, but how will you support yourself. Yes, this is very much the message sent to boys. How many teachers at your kids school are male.
