[/quote] I would guess that when you haven't had the experience with the person yourself, and you're close and know them on another level, it's easy to close your eyes and ears to rumor and stories and not admit it even to yourself. And then when you can no longer escape, it must be hard to face -- both knowing that your friend did this stuff and it's real, and that you were either willfully blind or knew on some level and ignored it for years.
