Yes they both worked, they  couldn't live off of the money that Thelma's parents left her. They simply took that relatively small sum of money added to it and invested it and then putting that into savings while still working.  I believe originally it was supposed to be a retirement fund but then it became much more than that. my grandmother told me that for time they actually flipped houses and made a great deal of money on that and all the money they made they would reinvest.[/quote]
