Can I put in a request for a new thread when we officially learn this is FA? (It's kind of annoying having to jump to the end of this massive thread to see if anyone is talking about the official cause of death.)
Nah. I wanna be here to make fun of you when it is all done and we know it was because of the heat.
The heat did not kill them. Heat related deaths can be determined in autopsy.
From what I have read, heat as a cause of death can only be determined by ruling out other factors (in a case like this where there are no witnesses). They are still waiting for all of the toxicology results.
This is what Dr. Michael Baden published: Autopsy 1. Autopsy findings in heat stroke are subtle and include degeneration of neurons in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and basal ganglia, and scattered petechiae in the walls of the third and fourth ventricles and the aqueduct. Petechiae also may be found in the thoracic and abdominal viscera. Postmortem decomposition begins early and prog- resses rapidly. Localized application of heat to the skin can result in bums of varying degrees (see Chapter XV). Death resulting from cold and exposure is associated with bright red postmortem lividity. Cutis anserina (goose-flesh) may be present because of rigor of the arrectores pilorum muscles. The onset of decomposition is delayed, t and the process is slowed.
