DCI could improve things a lot by having kids test into the IB program between middle and high school but unfortunately the parents are too equity pilled at this point.
DCI motto is literally IB for all. This comment seems pretty out of touch.
Right. I mean, if you want an IB program that has only the most academically motivated or high-scoring or highly-graded kids - DCI isn't for you. That's just not the school it was ever meant to be or claimed it was. It's a public charter school with IB for all, open to all. It can be, and is, high quality in lots of other ways, and lots of kids do get IB diplomas, score high, etc. Whether your kid does is dependent on your kid and how much they take advantage of the opportunities they have. As a DCI high school parent (kid went to DCI middle school too) of a motivated/high-scoring/high-grades kid, it's also important to me that they have the opportunity to go to school with an incredible cross-section of DC kids.
Amen. We declined the offer of family money to send our kids to private schools, precisely because we didn't want to insulate them from the world. They have come out of DCI with everything we'd hoped for-- a good education, strong language skills, good test scores, good college admissions, and comfort in cultures near (like NE DC) and far (like Senegal).
I would 100% send my kid to private over DCI if we had the option. Kid is at DCI middle. I don’t see it as insulating them from the world but not exposing them to constant bad behavior and teachers who don’t bother to monitor what kids are doing online. They can be exposed to the world in many other ways.
Well, we got into a highly regarded private and declined the offer. We applied to just see outcome and then weighed choices we had. Not worth the close to 60k price tag a year when you can get a good education at DCI and the IB diploma. I didn’t want my kid to be in a bubble of entitlement and wealth because you are insulating them from the world. We know a family well with kid who started in middle and now in high school who is having a great experience. BTW kid is now on the 3rd language since did so well in 2nd and might be shooting for the bilingual certificate in the IB diploma. I’m not discounting your experience but classroom management is also teacher and course dependent as everyone knows. Also my kid doesn’t care what other kids are doing online and can focus.
I am PP and this is very important for parents to consider. It’s great you have a kid that can sail through while ignoring the behavior and online activity, but many kids can’t. I firmly believe the school should be more restrictive. I agree that management is teacher dependent but I’ve been underwhelmed by the teachers. I am a teacher in the burbs and some stuff that’s happened in my kids class would never fly in most schools. Parents need to hear all perspectives, not just the few with super focused kids who can tune out the noise.
