Is there really an advantage to attend a top medical school? Everyone will become a doctor no matter which medical school they attend. Am I missing something?
It is important for physicians who want to do research or otherwise stay in academia, and is also very helpful for those that want to go to industry/consulting. It’s also a very rewarding experience to see top physicians in action - they are usually not there for the money, and I think it is good for our young people to watch smart teams that will not tolerate mediocrity interact to improve, innovate, and push patient care forward. I guess if money is your be-all-end-all then a top 20 med school isn’t “useful”. So, yes, I would take free or cheap tuition over a top 20 med school any day; however, I would shoot for a top residency because it really is impressive to watch the elite teams in action. And I agree thar doctors have plenty of flaws, but in general, as a patient, I do want a smarter better trained doctor who isn’t lazy and isn’t in it solely for the money.
