OP this is SO FAMILIAR down to nearly the same details that I texted my wife to see if she typed this. For folks who are recommending DBT - does that work for autistic kids? Our teen has had to clean up the mess for YEARS, been in therapy for YEARS, now that she gets an allowance she also pays for things she breaks, but STILL it happens.
Wow, this is OP and so glad to know I’m not alone. So we have been doing DBT for about a year and despite my post I can tell you that it’s been a game changer. Yes we still have this issue to deal with but we have tackled several others and my kid is a different kid than she was. She’s even grown in this area in that she understands what triggers her, knows what was wrong with her response, and is coming to understand she needs to find coping skills before she reaches this point. We have done ineffective therapy for at least a decade where nothing changed and she either rolled around on the couch (sometimes on the floor) and made inappropriate noises or ranted for 60 minutes straight while the therapist admired her intelligence. She now sits in a session, communicates appropriately with her therapist, has stopped ineffective behaviors with teachers, adults and the therapist and is able to work through things. She has a LONG way to go, but she’s come a long way. I think for our kids, the effective strategies just take a lot longer.
