For years, my sister and her husband clung to this idea of building the small retirement home of their dreams. They're finally seeing the light that this makes no financial sense. Just come up with a short list of your must haves and see if you can find something close enough that you can make into something that you love. Otherwise you're going to spend an extra $800K to have whatever specific little details that you're fantasizing about and you'll lose money on the resale. Make sure you're not buying in a tear down neighborhood or else everything you put into it will be a bad investment. [/quote]
