VT is more flexible about admissions, especially for 1st gen to college, but VT also actively fails students out (particularly in engineering). Colleagues who graduated from VT in Engineering all say they were told by VT officials during their 1st week that 25% of Freshmen Eng students would be gone for academic reasons by start of Sophomore year. UVa is more rigid at admissions time, but doesn’t really try to fail people out.
