I went to a prep school and then an ACC school where lacrosse was very popular a generation ago and I always had a very negative disposition toward lacrosse players, especially the ones at UVA. I was on one of the women's teams in another sport and one of the first things our coaches and older teammates would communicate to first year women was never date one of the lacrosse players.

When the Duke scandal happened and even after it resolved I had two very young sons who hadn't started sports yet. The Duke event hardened my negative opinion of the sport and the boys who played it in the prep schools and colleges. The Duke kids were innocent of rape but certainly confirmed the party hard don't care attitude that fits the negative narrative. By the time the UVA murder happened both of my sons were already enthusiastic boys playing lacrosse since it it so popular with kids in this area. Again I just felt that if I have sons who take this sport seriously it would be a bad thing. Now my sons still play but have dropped out of the lacrosse crazy herd and they don't go to a prep school where lacrosse is the big thing. I was so happy when one of them found another sport and another found other interests and only wants to play in the spring for his high school. I can't think of a worse nightmare as a mom than looking anyone in the eye who asks and say my son is a Duke or a UVA lacrosse player. [/quote]
