I am with 100% with Israel and the Israeli people. I am a minority. Non-White. Non-Christian. Immigrant. I am a Democrat who is horrified how quickly democracy folded in this country. But, I also do not discuss politics. I do not let anyone in my friend's group discuss politics, race and religion. I would have stood up and blasted the ringleader for discussing this topic in my presence in the first place.
If you and your friends actually never discuss politics, in today's political environment, or race, or even religion- these are not friends and you are barely a functioning person. What the heck are you you all ? Barbie dolls that meet for dinner or coffee? WHAT on earth do you all talk about? Tennis, golf, and your clothes? Such shallow, vapid ignorance.
I would never discuss politics with my friends. My politics are none of their business, and theirs are none of mine. There are a gazillion other things I'd rather discuss with my friends.
Then they aren’t friends. You have a bunch of surface level acquaintances and or coworkers. But- no, they aren't friends. And I can assure you, if you aren’t discussing the most important issues in the country and world today, yeah, they already know what your politics are.
Maybe in your world. I have grade school and high school friends that I've known for 40+ years. Our family has many other friends...families of friends of all of our kids. Whenever we get together, we don't discuss politics. It doesn't even come up. I don't know what their politics are, and they don't know mine/ours. We have many, many other things that we enjoy discussing. We save our politics for the ballot box.
Politics involve absolutely everything- our health, our finances and economics, our homes, our children, education, the environment, our relationships. I would not even imagine having long term relationships with anyone where their values and thoughts were not front and center. Furthermore, there is real angst in this world that we are watching up close- the immigration deportations, 2 major wars, our decimated health care, authoritarian rule, interest rates, job loss, and gun violence. If somehow none of those impact any part of your sphere, then you have had a lobotomy. You are likely the dumbest person around or just heavily medicated. Remember when people disappeared in Germany in the 30s? Do you suppose people just acted like it wasn't happening- like you are doing? Yes, many did exactly that. I will say again, if your friends are not talking about any of the above around you, it is because they already know where you stand and they are accommodating you, why, I have no idea. But- they sure are discussing later, and I can bet your name comes up a lot.
Yes, politics is everywhere and I can get more than my fill of it from watching the news or picking up a newspaper. This is precisely why we don't feel the need to discuss it. When we discuss other things, it is so that we can get away for a brief respite from the ugliness of it all...including the vitriol and namecalling in your above post. I'm sure you are a joy to hang out with.
My family and friends do not pretend that all this is not happening and discuss the weather or what they ate yesterday. Yes, everyone, all the time, discusses all of their thoughts but also their actions to fight back and contribute to change. Not talking about what it going on is being complicit. It's real life.
