I don't think you were being literal, exactly.  Consciously you aren't there yet.  But, the impulse to write that came from within you.  Somewhere.  On some level, you would think the person deserved it and had brought it upon themselves somehow, even if consciously you viewed it as a regrettable excess.  Omelettes and eggs, after all.
