I daresay all of you are completely missing the point. MAGA is very happy about this. Because it confirms their views that there is substantial wasteful spending going nowhere useful, whether for mysterious overseas aid programs or studying trans issues at some college. These payments highlight payments that would be legal and under directives but you are overlooking the demands to know why we are even making those payments in the first place. And one of the major problems (in the eyes of MAGA/DOGE) is that the bureaucracy is so vast that there is little accountability and oversight of unelected bureaucrats, who did manage to have powers to make decisions and approve funding for this and that that wasn't directly related to specific Congressional edicts. Remember Chevron? It allowed unelected bureaucrats to come up with regulations on its own. And now Chevron has been struck down. Even with COVID, who authorized US grants to WIV in the first place and why? Where's the accountability there? Congress doesn't know where all the money is being spent, the White House doesn't know where all the money is being spent. With a 36 trillion deficit and massive deficit spending, things can't go on the way they have. I don't doubt we will come across many more $50M for condoms for Gaza type stories. And unfortunately there will be "aid" that effectively ended up in the pockets of local tyrants and terrorist groups. And I don't doubt that a major reason behind Musk's interest in all the Federal IT systems it related to figuring out where every penny is going and the records kept across separate systems that makes it difficult to audit thoroughly. Hasn't the Pentagon failed audits for so many years? Yes, I agree it seems like a sledgehammer is being taken to the federal bureaucracy and I am sympathetic for people for whom this must seem like an entire world and way of life is falling apart overnight. But I do understand why this is happening.
Disagree. Musk is spinning a narrative to try and give MAGAs validation, yes. But is it a legitimate and fact-based narrative? Not yet, and not even remotely. For now he is just throwing numbers around, some of which make no sense - for example his other "DOGE DEI Contracts" tweet which had numbers that made no sense at all, for example supposedly OPM spending more in DEI contracts than they have in their entire budget. We are NOT seeing any specific details or context to know what exactly is being referenced, how Musk is weirdly interpreting things, and so on. Basically he is just spamming us with random points trying to peddle a narrative, which we don't even remotely know is true. And anyone out there saying "AHA! I KNEW IT ALL ALONG" needs to slow their roll, do a lot more research, ask a lot more questions, and do a lot more critical thinking. I suspect a lot of Musk's findings will fall apart in the weeks to come.
+1 he is just throwing meaningless nuggets to the MAGA base but we know the tin foil hat folks will find fake gold in every nugget.
