A robust middle class (which has been hollowed out in the US over the last 40 years) is essential to democratic stability.
Yet they keep hurting this by making basic goods too expensive. Cars, appliances. And they want to cut back on the suburbs, and put people in smaller apartments instead.
This is how most of the planet does it. Having a big house and big yard just for one family is quite uncommon in the rest of the world.
but the USA is NOT the rest of the world- we are exceptional. we are the only country that has a top 5 population and such a high mean gdp. whatever we were doing was working super well, we have lost the plot a few times but come back to a righted ship and i think honestly i have hope that not becoming hysterical and working on community, raising my kids to be educated and hardworking and supporting those communities that are at risk.. we'll right the ship again. its the gilded age again some history will have to happen before we get back to a strong middle class.
