I live in NC. UVA has always been considered prestigious. UM and UWMadison never have been: top kids do not apply. They apply to UNC-CH and NCState as "backups" then they apply to UVA as reach(OOS) and T15/ivy for super reaches. UVA is highly respected and sough after here, and many pick it over UNC in state because it is seen as slightly more prestigious and more national than UNC which is dominated by in-state kids and they think it will be a repeat of high school cliques.
So what you’re saying is the UNC and UVA are regional schools. Nobody, outside of your bubble, thinks either school is more prestigious than Michigan.
And yet UVA is ranked immediately below Michigan (no 4 public) Nd UNA is ranked right below that (No 5) by USNWR best public jniversities in America https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public?_sort=rank&_sortDirection=asc
And yet they aren’t as prestigious as Michigan since they are ranked lower. In world rankings, neither school is ranked anywhere near Michigan in prestige either.
