Her story doesn’t pass the sniff test. She was upset that the dog wasn’t a good hunting dog by 14 months. She was embarrassed that she was responsible for the neighbors’ chickens being killed. Her emotions got the best of her and she killed the dog without weighing her options or consulting with anyone. Then she killed the goat because, what the hell, it stank and chased her kids and she was in a heightened emotional state and she didn’t want to deal with it anymore. She was frazzled enough that she couldn’t put the goat down with one shot. She was shooting animals, oblivious to onlookers, until it was over. She claims it’s legal to put down a an animal that has killed livestock. Chickens aren’t classified as livestock under South Dakota law. As in most states, they’re classified as poultry. I’m supposed to believe a farmer doesn’t know that chickens aren’t livestock? I don’t know if what she did was legal. She mentions that the dog whipped around to bite her when she tried to stop the attack on the chickens. That’s it. She doesn’t say the dog actually bit anyone. The goat didn’t kill any livestock. She was just an angry person with a gun that day. I don’t know what the strategy is in sharing this story and showing no remorse whatsoever, but perhaps, as a pp suggested, she knew somebody was going to go public with it and she decided to do it on her own terms.
