Top 20 is nebulous. It's not exactly the top 20 on USnews and there's other rankings out there. And yes that does include the the rest of the top 25 and LACs. T20 has always been more of a slang term that encompasses more than 20 schools.
This is what people from schools that are not ranked in the top 20 always say lol.
You're a moron. There is more than 1 ranking. Using USnews as the only ranking to qualify prestige is stupid especially since they don't rank LACs. For instance USC is 27 on USnews but 19 on Times. While Notre Dame is 19 on USnews and 36 on Times. So why should ND be considered a top school if USC is not? There's 5 undergrad rankings, they all should be taken into consideration not just 1. .
I have one kid in USC and one kid in ND, so I'll pick and choose better number from each LOL However, USN&WR seems more reasonable for undergraduate. Overall I would consider ND a T20 school and USC a T25 school. Overall ranking is just for an initial reference, specific program and fit is more important. For my kid 1 USC is definitely a better school, and for kid 2 ND is definitely a better school.
That's why rankings are so flawed. Ultimately, you're a moron if you pick a T20 schools solely on it's overall ranking. Much more important to pick by desired major, ability/ease to transfer to other majors, FIT for your kid (if kid loves the school and is excited and fits in, they will just do so much better in the long run), graduation rate, job placement, grad school placement, med school placement (there are smaller not T20 schools that place 85-90% of their students in med school the first year---that matters much more than attending a T20 school if your ultimate goal is med school), NCLEX pass rates if you plan to be nurse, and so many other things. Go where your kid finds their best fit. If it's a T30-50 school they are all amazing schools, but each has it's strengths and weaknesses. Kids do transfer out of Columbia, MIT, Harvard, etc...those are not perfect schools for everyone (and there are ones who stay but are not happy with their choice)
Well, at least there's a little sanity in this thread.
