Jeff deletes comments that are critical of teachers.
There was an entire discussion based on the premise that black teachers don't want to get vaccinated and the WTU wants to protect them. We have no idea what the vaccination rate of teachers are or anything about the race of those who may be unvaxed. Further, we don't know the WTU's position regarding mandatory vaccinations, though we do know the union is strongly in favor of vaccinations. Let's please keep posts within the realm of known facts rather than creating negative, racially-based imaginary narratives.
We dont have teacher vaccination data because WTU is working very hard to hide that information from the public. (We do know however the vaccination rate of other groups of government employees such as cops who have shared their numbers). But if roughly 40 percent of adults in the DMV are not fulling vaccinated, it seems quite likely that around 40 percent of teachers are not fully vaccinated. A lot of people would consider that outrageous, since teachers closed schools here longer than virtually anywhere else in the United States.
Regardless of why we don't have vaccination data, we don't have it. Also, unless you are privy to the DCPS-WTU negotiations, you don't know the Union's position regarding making such information public. Just as you are assuming that teachers vaccinate at exactly the same rate as the general population, one could hypothesize that an educated population that works in close quarters with large numbers of potentially unvaccinated children is likely to vaccinate at a higher rate. But, both you and I are just guessing and guesses should not be the basis of statements of fact.
New York City says 40 percent of its public school teachers are unvaccinated.
That would be very interesting if this were the New York City Public and Charter Schools forum. I really don't know why it is so hard to stick to known facts. We don't know the vaccination rates of teachers. Similarly, we don't know about the non-teaching staff. We don't know about the students. We don't know about the students' families. When we send our kids to school we are going to be exposing them to risks. I'm not sure that jumping up and down and hollering about teachers and the WTU is the best way to address that risk.
Well, we know that teachers are 14% of DCPS covid cases this month, and breakthrough infections are still rare. Since the ratio of teachers: students is very low, this means teachers are disproportionately represented in the data. (Staff looking much worse, at 40% of the infections.)
Can you post where this info is?
https://coronavirus.dc.gov/data/schools
