There's a lot of similarities between affluent "old money" South and affluent families in Latin America. Emphasis on impeccable manners, beautifully decorated houses, women really do make an effort to look composed and presented, and many subtle social rules and mannerism that may be hard for outsiders to see but which speak volumes.
Because they are both servant/colonial cultures. Southeast Asia is also similar.
DP You made me gasp. I was reading this thread mildly amused since I have no intersect with affluent Southern culture, but feeling a sense of familiarity. When you mentioned Southeast Asia, I understood why.
I'm the poster who made the comparison to Latin America and also agree with SE Asia and South Asia and the Middle East too. It's less to do with colonialism and more that any culture that has a history of depending on servants evolves a set of mannerism and attitudes that exists because there are servants to support it. It's easier to have beautiful houses and be nicely dressed when someone else is doing the cleaning and ironing. Cultural divides emerge between those who employ servants and those who can't, and a stigma of superior morality gets attached to being able to employ servants. It's an ancient class-based mindset that's found in pretty much every old culture across the world and was also prevalent in Europe not that long ago. Even though there are few servants beyond cleaners in the South these days, for whatever reason they've retained many elements of that cultural heritage.
