Watching it now - going back the the "why is Commander Lawrence still alive?" question. The high-ranking men protect each other/won't hold each other accountable because they don't want to be held accountable themselves. The guy in charge of that hearing was Putnam - the one that had his hand cut off for his affair with Janine. If they start turning on each other, where does it end? I also think they are kind of desperate. Sounds like there are sanctions, lots of fronts in the war, etc. And they are bumbling around talking about invading Canada. Lawrence is actually smart.
Lawrence was saved by Nick, who surely regrets it after that last meeting.
Yes, but I'd argue the above still stands.
I agree with all of it, just adding that Nick saved Lawrence for his own purposes, and that’s why he’s still alive. So many people live or die in Gilead because those in power have a personal stake in their outcome. None of it is truly based on “righteousness.” Ever shifting sands, nothing solid.
I’ve read some history of Stalinist Russia and much of it is similar. People who you would think would be goners for sure are released home while others are shot. Seemed to depend a lot on random things like someone having a good/bad day, beuroctati. ineptitude or laziness, etc. sometimes it’s just easier not to kill someone, or someone delays for whatever reason and then the moment has passed and no one is focused on it anymore. There’s a lot of randomness is despotism.
