As a British Jew who is fairly indifferent to the monarchy, I feel compelled to comment to say that the allegations about British Jews being handed over to the Nazis by King George are utter garbage. I’m also astonished at how invested some of you feel about a country and its symbolic leaders thousands of miles away.
As someone who comes from a former colony of the British Empire, yeah, I am invested. My grandparents generation was the last one in centuries of rule that was treated like crap. It’s not that far from my reach in terms of impact.
For some, they're still be impacted by being treated like crap. Did you see how the Brits treated the Windrush generation under May? Senior citizens who immigrated healthy in the 1940s-1960s to help rebuild that country from scratch after all the bombings. Now the UK is trying to kick them out even though they came legally from Commonwealth countries!
Legally is not the word to use. Therein lies the problem.
The Windrush came to Britain in the early 20th century when all they needed was a stamp on their papers when they exited the port. They didn't need a British passport or Birth certificate because their Caribbean passports established them as Commonwealth citizens with the right to work. Britain called THEM to come rebuild their burned out capital, work in their factories, and clear the rubble since so many British men were dead. Now 70 years later the British PM and Home Office wants to clear them out just as they're coming into their pensions and state benefits? F*ck out of here.
Look, the Windrush scandal was awful. But honestly what has this got to do with the Cambridges and Sussexes? Sometimes I come onto threads and I'm shocked by how quickly it turns into bashing the UK for its entire history. Yes, there are terrible parts of the British past. There are also terrible parts of the history of most countries, including the one I now live in.
