There are a lot of Jews who would say it does make them part of the Jewish people. It’s not a mandatory criterion, but it’s one way of being Jewish for a lot of people.
Then they should speak just for themselves. My friend resents Jewish people insisting that he's Jewish just because his mother was Jewish. He says he isn't Jewish.
Why? If he has Jewish background, he’s ethnically Jewish, even if he’s not Jewish from a religious or cultural standpoint. What’s his issue with that?
What's wrong is that he doesn't like that lie. He says he's ethnically Polish, just as many other Jewish people.
It’s not a lie. Being Polish is a nationality, not an ethnicity. It’s like the difference between being Russian (a nationality) and Slavic (ethnicity). Most Jews will point to Ashkenazi Jewish (for example) as part/all of their ethnic background and then will specify the country/countries their relatives are from.
What authority can you provide for this theory? Being Slavic points to a geographic region, not a country. There's no geographic region (or country) that points to your Jewishness. Therefore, it can be your faith, or even your race if you like, but not your ethnicity, and certainly not your nationality.
